Stories I’ve been devouring lately (and that have been eating my soul)

Dear beloved, we’re gathered here today to mourn my soul, which’s being slowly destroyed by all the books I’ve been reading lately.

Hi friends! It is me again. Today I’m here to share with you some of the books I’ve been reading and some of the book I might be planning on reading during the summer (emphasis on might because we all know I suck at sticking with TBRs). Okay, let’s dive in!

25164304

So the first book that I’ve read was in May and it was Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst. This book follows Dennaleia, the princess of Havemont, who’s to marry Thandi, the prince of Mynaria so their kingdoms can join forces, however, Denna has a Fire Affinity (that’s forbidden) so she needs to try and hide it from everyone. All that on top of her future marriage while falling in love with the prince’s sister, Mare. This book literally took my heart and crushed it. The f/f romance was so amazing, and I just fell in love with the characters so quickly. Even the friendships in this book, you couldn’t help but love them.  I loved it so so much and I kid you not when I say that if this sequel doesn’t get here quick I might literally die.

The next book I’ve read was The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth (WHICH IS NOW BECOMING A MOVIE YAY!). In case you don’t know, this book follows Cameron Post. Cameron’s parents die in a car crash and her first thought is the relief because hours earlier, she had been kissing a girl. After that Cam is forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth and her well-intentioned but hopelessly old-fashioned grandmother. Then Coley Taylor moves to town. She and Cam forge an unexpected and intense friendship–one that seems to leave room for something more to emerge. But just as that starts to seem like a real possibility, her Aunt Ruth finds out about what was happening and sends her to conversion therapy. This book was really hard to get through personally. The first half of the book was okay but, the second half oH boy. The only downside to this book was that the chapters were kind of long. I feel like I should leave a trigger warning for mentions of self-harm (it’s kind of graphic) and of course, the central topic of the book (and the movie) is conversion therapy.

The nest book I’ve read was Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson. I’ve first read 6 chapters of this book back in April, which was provided by NetGalley (bless their souls).  This book follows Camila Flores, whose best friend died and people believe that it was a part of a suicide pact (considering that in the same week two other girls from her school were found dead too). Mila refuses to believe everyone’s explanation that her best friend was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life. But when she does bring them back, they have no memory of what happened. I’ve never read a book about Wiccan culture and this was so much fun to read. I loved the characters and the plot and the twists, gosh.  When I finished reading the excerpt I immediately knew I had to read the whole book. I was so hooked, it’s ridiculous. If you like witches, you’ll absolutely love this, I swear. (Bonus point for a fat main character!)

Next up! We have Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde. Okay after finishing the Miseducation of Cameron Post I needed fluff. I just did. As I mentioned before I had a hard time getting through it so I needed to recover and this book was perfect for that. You know when you go to a Con and you just have the best time meeting your favorite people? This book is all about that! I went to my first Comic Con last year and this book brought all those feelings and memories back. The anxiety rep in this book is so accurate and I felt really understood and personally, seeing Taylor (the character with anxiety) being loved and supported gave me so much comfort. Charlie is a vlogger and actress promoting her first movie at SupaCon, and this is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought. Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.

Next up is my most recent read and that is Running with Lions by Julian Winters. Gosh! I have so much love for this book. You should know, I’m not a big fan of sports, so sport-related books aren’t really my thing but this book won me over within a few pages. Bloomington High School Lions’ star goalie, Sebastian Hughes, should be excited about his senior year: His teammates are amazing and he’s got a coach who doesn’t ask anyone to hide their sexuality. But when his estranged childhood best friend Emir Shah shows up to summer training camp, Sebastian realizes the team’s success may end up in the hands of the one guy who hates him. Determined to reconnect with Emir for the sake of the Lions, he sets out to regain Emir’s trust. But to Sebastian’s surprise, sweaty days on the pitch, wandering the town’s streets, and bonding on the weekends sparks more than just friendship between them. The only issue I had with this book (was a very light one) was the fact that it was written in the third person and at first, it became a bit confusing for me but truly it just took me a second to get used to it. I fell in love with Emir more and more throughout the novel and his relationship with Sebastian was so sweet. The friends to enemies to lovers was the amazing trope I deserved.

Lastly, a book I finished not long ago. If I Tell You by Alicia Tuckerman. This story follows seventeen-year-old Alex Summers lives with a secret and the constant fear someone will find out. But when a new family moves to town, they bring with them their teenage daughter Phoenix Stone. When Alex falls for Phoenix, there is no warning. In a small town with small minds, girls don’t go out with other girls, even if they want to. In fear there is bravery – you can either cling to the edge or have the courage to jump. But what do you do when you’re left spiraling through the freefall

Sooo… This was sort of a disappointment. I went in expecting a fluffy f/f romance and oh boy, I have to say that cover and the synopsis are VERY deceiving. Before I start I want to give TW for lesbophobia, domestic violence, and substance abuse. (mentions)

So I’m not gonna go around and say the book was terrible because, in all honesty, it wasn’t. It was actually enjoyable and good to some extent. But I was taken aback with the homophobia (which was a big part of the book, pretty much all of it). I loved the characters even though Alex was a bit selfish at points and Phoenix was a bit much. The plot was interesting to see and well, I guess no one really saw that plot twist coming. I think my favorite thing about this was probably the ending? I mean I loved how it didn’t feel rushed or it didn’t end terribly and it just tied everything together.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Okay so let’s talk about Phoenix dying, shall we? I didn’t see that coming at all. And of course, she was kind of a hypocrite with the whole “You have to jump” business but if I was in her position I would obviously do the same thing. Although it probably wasn’t the author’s intent I think the fact that she got killed off is fitting into the whole “let’s kill off LGBTs show everyone they don’t matter” (again I know that probably wasn’t the author’s intention). Another thing that really triggered me was how graphic the scene with Alex’s mum was and I don’t know if it was my state of mind but I was really uncomfortable with that. Aside from that, I think the novel was actually enjoyable but it could’ve been better.

Now let’s get into the stories that are currently eating me alive. I’m only reading 2 books at the moment (obviously I’m starting more soon) and one of them is an autobiography, but still, I have to talk about it. I’m currently reading Dodie Clark’s Secrets for the Mad and holy fuck! Those are the two words I’d use, to sum up, my experience so far. I’m about 50% into the book and so far I’ve cried SO much. If you know about this book, you should know that mental health, eating disorders & drinking problems are discussed in the book. I personally haven’t dealt with any eating disorders and I also don’t drink so I can’t really speak about those but reading Dodie speak up (or rather write up?) about her mental health brought up so many emotions I didn’t even know I was repressing. Seeing someone go through what you once went through (and, in my case, still are) is really comforting in a sense where you realize you’re not that alone after all and this book really gave me that feeling.

The next book has been on my TBR pretty much since it came out and now that I’m reading it I so regret not picking it up earlier, and that’s The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. Oh dear God. I’m about 80% into this book and I am in love with it but it’s also making me lose my mind. I love these characters so much, all of them, and at first, I was hesitant because this is historical fiction and that’s not really my thing but I don’t regret picking this up for a second.

ARC Review – The Art of Escaping

Hi friends!! With the release of this amazing book coming up in just two days I thought I’d finally post the review for it. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review so here it is. Although I gave this book 3,75 stars (although I gave it 3,5 on Goodreads) I can tell you it’s a really enjoyable book and if you pick it up you won’t regret it.

The Art of Escaping
by Erin Callahan
★★★¾

When Will, a popular athlete from school, discovers Mattie’s act at an underground venue, Mattie fears her secret persona will be exposed. Instead of outing her, Will tells Mattie a secret, not even his girlfriend knows. Through a blossoming friendship, the two must find a way to express their authentic selves. Seventeen-year-old Mattie has a hidden obsession: escapology. Emphasis on hidden. If anyone from school finds out, she’ll be abandoned to her haters. Facing a long and lonely summer, Mattie finally seeks out Miyu, the reclusive daughter of a world-renowned escape artist. Following in Houdini’s footsteps, Miyu helps Mattie secretly transform herself into an escapologist and performance artist.

Told through the perspectives of the witty main characters, this funny and fresh debut explores the power of stage personas and secret spaces and speaks to the uncanny ways in which friendships transform us.

Okay, I’ll admit: this book was a bit hard to get into, but I believe that was because I wasn’t really familiar with the subject and my motivation wasn’t at its highest. Obviously, I wouldn’t give it a negative review or give up on the book because of that and I’m so glad I didn’t. As I mentioned, I wasn’t really familiar with escapology and so I had to kind of wrap my mind around it but after I did I got really into it and into the book itself.

Let’s talk characters, shall we?

First, we have Mattie. Mattie is not your typical main character. She’s not friendless, her family is not abusive in any way, and she does have a normal life. Except she keeps her secret obsession for escapology exactly that: a secret. Until she meets Will everything is fine really, she gets the daughter of her idol to train and mentor her and even if she’s not the easiest person to deal with, things go as well as they can go. In my personal opinion, Mattie is a really likable character and her narrative is really good to follow,

Next, we have Will. Our Will with Two L’s is not at all what he seems.  To the outside world, Will is the popular guy who’s just too cool to ever befriend someone like Mattie, but it isn’t until we see Will’s side of the story, we realize that’s not the case at all. Will does want a friendship with Mattie and even though he presents himself as the typical teenage jock that’s not who he is at all. And it isn’t until he meets Mattie that he realizes that he doesn’t need to be that person anymore and could be true to himself. For me, Will was like that friend you can’t help but love even if they make dumb decisions, so seeing him get that development made me so proud and my heart so happy.

Now onto our side characters.

If I’m being totally blunt here I thought I was gonna hate Miyu. I thought she was arrogant and unnecessarily rude but as the story moved forward I actually started to like her a lot. She grew on me just like she did with Mattie over time. I kind of wish we had the chance to see a little bit more of Miyu to maybe understand her better but I’m content with what we’ve got.

Then we have Frankie. Now, I immediately loved Frankie. As soon as he was introduced, I loved him so much, I just wanted to hug him all the time and protect him from all the evil and after knowing he was  Luso-American (his dad, I believe, was from Azores, Portugal)  I loved him even more. You would think that you’d be fed up because he’s so much younger than the rest of the characters and he would probably act kind of childish or immature but you realize that Frankie is actually really mature for his age.

Now onto Stella. Stella is Mattie’s best friend in the world. She’s practically the reason why Mattie turned into escapology or rather, her going to summer school is the reason. We don’t get to see that much of Stella, but from what we see of her we get the impression that she’s a fun girl full of surprises. She’s kind and caring and she doesn’t really care about what people think of her. Even though we haven’t followed Stella’s whole story we do get to see her plenty to enjoy her and her company just as much as everyone else’s.

We do get to see a bit of Mattie’s family but their presence isn’t all that relevant in the novel. We get to see more her brother and his friend than properly their parents which to be honest didn’t bother me all that much.

My overall thought of the plot is that even though it took me a second to get into it, I ended up really enjoying it and I honestly can’t wait to read more of Erin’s writings. The narrative is really fun to follow because I feel like the way she gave voice to both of the main characters was really realistic and that made it really easy to follow the story as well (hence the ¾).

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still, it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Leah On the Offbeat – book review

Leah On The Offbeat
by Becky Albertalli
★★★★½

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

Becky Albertalli has done it again. I didn’t think I’d be this obsessed with a book, but I was proven wrong. In case you don’t know this Leah on the Offbeat is actually the sequel for Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda (and the movie Love, Simon which is now in theatres, PLEASE please!!! GO WATCH IT) and it follows Leah, Nick, Abby, Simon, and Bram in their senior year through Leah’s eyes.

Becky’s writing just has this way of getting you hooked, and the way she writes teenage characters is just so accurate, which just makes it all more enjoyable. Besides writing characters and storylines you can relate to, Becky writes the world in a very realistic way which sort of makes things seem familiar in a way. I think that’s why I got hooked so much when I first started reading Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda.

My God, I loved this book so much! So, so much! I’ve been anticipating this book for a while now and I just knew I would love it ever since I read the first chapter. After waiting for it for so long, I just couldn’t put it down when I was reading it. This book was just the perfect ending to the Simonverse. The last chapter tied everything together and really brought it full circle. There were some minor issues with it, of course, but I feel like overall it was a really good read and a very quick one. After I finished the book I was feeling so many emotions I just needed to talk about it, so here I am.

So, by now we’ve seen 3 versions of Leah and both of them are slightly different. We’ve seen Simon vs Leah, which, thanks to Simon being a clueless peanut and therefore an unreliable narrator, didn’t give us Leah’s story exactly as it is. I feel like in Simon vs, Leah wasn’t exactly the most likable person. Like, she was a really good friend and she was a good person in general, but there was stuff about her that sometimes made you kind of not like her, if that makes sense?

We’ve got Love, Simon Leah, which frankly we didn’t get that much of her character, besides the person Simon thought she was. And, finally, we’ve got Leah from Leah on the Offbeat which is, without a doubt, the most complex of the three. In Leah on the Offbeat, we get to see that Leah isn’t so unlikable at all. Sure, she has a resting bitch face and she can come off as aggressive at times, but underneath all that, she’s a really cool person and a really enjoyable character too.

I feel like this book is different from Simon vs and Upside, not only because we have a character that might not be as likable as the other two main characters, but because we really get to see Leah. Not as everyone else sees her, but we get to see this whole new story unfold and seeing the world through her eyes is really a whole new perspective and it was amazing to see it.

Leah’s story began way before the beginning of this book. And reading her story from her point of view we really get to understand why she did things that she did in Simon vs. but, as I said, we never saw things the way they were because Simon is not a very reliable narrator, and he’s literally the most clueless character you’ll ever meet. In Leah on the Offbeat, we get a new view on Leah’s life, her thoughts on things and people, dilemmas when it comes to senior prom, and first love. Not only in the present day but we get a view of things that happened in the past too, and I think that is really amazing for the people that, like me, loved Leah in the first book and wanted to know more about her.

One of my favorite things about Leah is the fact that she’s an introvert. Leah has a large friend group and it’s a really supportive group, but despite that we still see Leah being lonely and wondering what it would be like to have someone in your life in a romantic way. I can’t really speak much about representation because I’m not bisexual myself, but as a member of the community, I really think the book did us justice and really get to see a lot of bisexual dynamics in here and that’s something we need a lot these days.

This book deals a lot with being a teenager and just normal teenage stuff, but it also deals with sexuality and what it feels like to be confused when it comes to it. We get to see it from two points of view: the one from the person who’s going through that, and also from an LGBTQ+ person who helps them deal with it and get through that. In my opinion, the book was really good. Like I said, in the beginning, there were some minor issues, but I was able to get past that and enjoy the book overall.

So if you loved Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and if you love LGBTQ+ themed books, you should definitely pick this up, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Lord Of The Flies

by William Golding

At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate; this far from civilization the boys can do anything they want. Anything. They attempt to forge their own society, failing, however, in the face of terror, sin, and evil. And as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far from reality as the hope of being rescued. Labeled a parable, an allegory, a myth, a morality tale, a parody, a political treatise, even a vision of the apocalypse, Lord of the Flies is perhaps our most memorable tale about “the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart.

by Chelsea M Cameron

Kyle Blake likes plans. So far, they’re pretty simple: Finish her senior year of high school, head off to a good college, find a cute boyfriend, graduate, get a good job, get married, the whole heterosexual shebang. Nothing is going to stand in the way of that plan. Not even Stella Lewis.

Stella Lewis also has a plan: Finish her senior year as cheer captain, go to college, finally let herself flirt with (and maybe even date) a girl for the first time and go from there.

Fate has other plans for Kyle and Stella when they’re paired up in their AP English class and something between them ignites. It’s confusing and overwhelming and neither of them know what to do about it. One thing they do know is that their connection can’t be ignored. The timing just isn’t right.

But is there ever a good time for falling in love?

The Miseducation of Cameron Post

by Emily M. Danforth

When Cameron Post’s parents die suddenly in a car crash, her shocking first thought is relief. Relief they’ll never know that, hours earlier, she had been kissing a girl.

But that relief doesn’t last, and Cam is soon forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth and her well-intentioned but hopelessly old-fashioned grandmother. She knows that from this point on, her life will forever be different. Survival in Miles City, Montana, means blending in and leaving well enough alone (as her grandmother might say), and Cam becomes an expert at both.

Then Coley Taylor moves to town. Beautiful, pickup-driving Coley is a perfect cowgirl with the perfect boyfriend to match. She and Cam forge an unexpected and intense friendship — one that seems to leave room for something more to emerge. But just as that starts to seem like a real possibility, ultrareligious Aunt Ruth takes drastic action to ‘fix’ her niece, bringing Cam face-to-face with the cost of denying her true self — even if she’s not exactly sure who that is.

April Wrap Up

Hi friends!! So this month was not as bad as I expected I didn’t expect to read as much as I did but in the last week or so, it was, literally, insane. This month I managed to read 8 books, (3 of them being a series) and I can say I’m quite happy about it, especially, considering my reviews were pretty good.

THE INFERNAL DEVICES SERIES
by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel ★★★½
Clockwork Prince ★★★★✩
Clockwork Princess
★★★★★

The series follows Tessa Gray, an orphaned teenage girl who discovers she has the power to shape-shift, but doesn’t bear a mark that shows she is a warlock. She is forced to learn how to control this newly established power and navigate the new world she was forcefully introduced into. The series follows Tessa’s life as she is forced to collaborate with the Shadowhunters in order to protect herself, her family, and her loved ones.

I tried to read this series once, right after I finished The Mortal Instruments but, for some reason, I couldn’t get past the first half of the first book. But, after reading the following novellas to the “main” series, that being TMI, (The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy) and acquiring more insight on the characters, Tessa, especially, I was curious about their personalities and their stories. So the second time I read it, I was much more invested and although the book is kind of slow at first the book itself and the series got so much more interesting and enjoyable.

I’ll Give You The Sun

by Jandy Nelson
★★★★★

Jude and her twin Noah were incredibly close – until a tragedy drove them apart, and now they are barely speaking. Then Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy as well as a captivating new mentor, both of whom may just need her as much as she needs them. What the twins don’t realize is that each of them has only half the story and if they can just find their way back to one another, they have a chance to remake their world.

This book owns all my heart. I knew I’d like this book from the moment I picked it up but I didn’t know this book would literally STEAL my heart. Through this, we really get to see that you never really know a full story and that that are always two sides to the same coin, which is something that can be hard to understand and to see sometimes. I just grew to love Noah and Jude so much throughout the book and I grew attached to them so quickly. The only thing that bothered me was the long chapters; otherwise, I’m 100% satisfied.

Many people might say the opposite, but this book was the perfect way to wrap up the Simonverse. Some say it was rushed and that it wasn’t good but I loved it so much and, I think because I loved Simon vs so much this book felt really close to my heart. The book has some minor issues and some stuff that might not have been unnecessary, but it’s still a really amazing book and it’s definitely worth reading.

A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns

by Archie Bongiovanni & Tristan Jimerson
★★★★★

Archie, a snarky genderqueer artist, is tired of people not understanding gender-neutral pronouns. Tristan, a cisgender dude, is looking for an easy way to introduce gender-neutral pronouns to his increasingly diverse workplace. The longtime best friends team up in this short and fun comic guide that explains what pronouns are, why they matter, and how to use them. They also include what to do if you make a mistake, and some tips-and-tricks for those who identify outside of the binary to keep themselves safe in this binary-centric world. A quick and easy resource for people who use they/them pronouns, and people who want to learn more!

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book and let me tell you something: you HAVE to pick it up once it’s out in stores. HAVE TO. As the title says, this is just a guide on they/them pronouns and it basically just talks about non-binary people and what to and not to say. It has a comic factor into it which just makes it a whole lot better. Even if you don’t identify as non-binary or if you don’t know anyone who identifies as non-binary I 100% recommend picking this up when you can. It’s absolutely worth it.

Algeria is Beautiful Like America

by Olivia Burton
★★★★✩

Olivia had always heard stories about Algeria from her maternal grandmother, a Black Foot (a “Pied-Noir,” the French term for Christian and Jewish settlers of French Algeria who immigrated to France after the Algerian War of Independence). After her grandmother’s death, Olivia found some of her grandmother’s journals and letters describing her homeland. Now, ten years later, she resolves to travel to Algeria and experience the country for herself; she arrives alone, with her grandmother’s postcards and letters in tow, and with but a single phone number in her pocket, of an Algerian Djaffar, who will act as her guide. Olivia’s quest to understand her origins will bring her to face questions about heritage, history, shame, friendship, memory, nostalgia, fantasy, the nature of exile, and our unending quest to understand who we are and where we come from.

In all honesty, I’m not big on memoirs. The only memoirs I’ve read are from youtubers I used to watch, but this book blew me away. It took me a minute to get into the book but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. Seeing stories like this really inspires a person and it’s really amazing to learn about new cultures, especially if it’s one you’re not familiar with. I can definitely say Olivia did an amazing job at retracting that culture and her experiences in another country and with its people. I would definitely recommend this especially if you’re into getting to know about new cultures.

I knew it’d be good from the second I read the first chapter but I never expected to become this good. This book blew me away, seriously. Becky and Adam did such an incredible job with these characters and their storylines it’s truly amazing. I grew so attached to Ben and Arthur is such a short time and I just felt so frustrated whenever something upsetting happened. I felt almost like these were my friends and I was just rooting for them all the time. It’s definitely one of my favorite books ever and I guarantee you, you won’t regret picking it up. Becky and Adam’s writing are already so excellent separately but together they combine so perfectly, it’s amazing and shocking in all the right ways.

Autoboyography – book review

autoboyography
Autoboyography
by Christina Lauren
★★★★★

Three years ago, Tanner Scott’s family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.
But when his best friend dares him to take Provo High’s prestigious Seminar, Tanner can’t resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity. It turns out, four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him.

Oh my goodness! Where do I even begin? This book gave me so many emotions. I didn’t know much about it before starting to read it and I’m actually kind of glad I didn’t. I have never been too much of religious person and, to be frank, I’m not too educated when it comes to the costumes of being religious; besides the typical holidays (Easter, Christmas…) and doing church services on Saturdays with my grandmother when I was younger, I haven’t gotten know that much about it. But this book showed me a different view on it, actually, both in a positive way and a not-so-positive one.

This story follows Tanner Scott, whose family moved to Utah from California three years prior to the beginning of the story. Besides forcing Tanner, who was an out and proud bisexual, temporarily back into the closet, the move and adjusting to the place went actually surprisingly well for our main character, after all, there was just one semester of high school to go. There were no obstacles between him and the freedom he’d gain when he moved out of state for college; until his best friend, Autumn convinces him to enroll in Provo High’s Seminar, — where honor roll students meticulously toil in order to draft a book in a semester—and he falls head over heels for the Mormon T.A, who sold his own novel the year before, Sebastian Brother.

Now, before getting into the plot, I should point out that Utah is an extremely religious place. The majority of the population is Mormon and Tanner’s family, his Mom being an ex-LDS and his Dad being Jewish, wasn’t too accepted in that environment, at all, that’s why Tanner needed to tip back into the closet, even though his family knows he’s bisexual, and he’s never had a problem with hiding his sexuality; that is, of course, until he met Sebastian.

Sebastian is your typical Mormon, he’s kind, he attends to the LDS church, he follows the rules, his book was getting published and is going on tour, he’s about to leave on mission at the end of the year, to spread the word about the church and he’s his family’s biggest pride and joy. But still, Tanner can’t help but fall for him and at one point he starts thinking that Sebastian might even like him back. But could they actually have something, with Sebastian’s religion getting in the way? That was a worry, not only to Tanner but to Tanner’s parents, who, obviously, don’t want their son to get hurt nor do they want the boy’s relationship to affect Sebastian.

While Tanner’s family is supportive, accepting and welcoming when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, Sebastian’s family is the exact opposite, they see homosexuality and the LGBTQ+ community in general, as something to despise and to be ashamed of. And for me, this was SO heartbreaking to read, not only the sadness of the situation itself but also the way it was written. This book was so emotional and raw, and it’s definitely one of my favorite books of all time, without a doubt.
